I have been known to neglect a blog a time or two and am attempting to rectify that again!
I thought I would show how much our lives have changed from where we thought we were going to where we have managed to arrive, below is the blurb that I wrote for our website (with ages updated) quite a few years ago, before I started YouTube and before we experience ‘True Off Grid Life’;
“It was always my dream to have a big family, but when I tell people we have six kids (including a set of twins), their reactions are mixed. I’m either brave, amazing, crazy or blessed, depending who you ask.
That’s complicated by their age range — currently 16 to 7 — and the fact they all have allergies and intolerances that make a lot of food problematic. To get around the latter I cook a lot from scratch, and to avoid having to piles the horde into a car twice a day I home school.
That helped, but it’s still hard to raise six kids with a husband who’s working long hours running his own retail business. We needed a change, so we decided to go bush to leave behind the rat race, the waste and frustration. We sought a simpler life and a smaller footprint.
We decided to document our journey to help others who want to follow us into a better, simpler, more sustainable life. We hope you can learn from my research and our (hopefully infrequent) mistakes.”
Man, that sounds so positive and bright and bubbly! Not to say that life hasn’t been fantastic, that the choices we made to move off grid and live the way we are were wrong, in any way. This is our dream, we are living it, and we are grateful for the fact that we have been able to do so! But life has definitely had its ups and downs, its ebbs and flows, its learning curves and its “beat you down until you don’t know which way is up” moments, but this is our forever.
Darryl and I are making this land and this home and this lifestyle our normal, the children can join us as they get older or they can follow their own paths, or even follow their own paths that might one day lead them back here! But, for Darryl and I, we have been lucky enough to start living our dream lifestyle with all its extremes at a fairly young age, and we love it.
